My journey to Arbitrium did not begin with a theory.

It began with a question.

Throughout more than five decades in leadership, business development and organisational change, I found myself returning to the same observation.

People exposed to the same information, working within the same organisation and facing the same circumstances often produced very different outcomes.

I gradually came to realise that I was asking those questions of myself as much as of anyone else.

Some of us embraced responsibility and opportunity.

Some of us did not.

The difference could not always be explained by knowledge, experience or capability alone.

Those experiences led me to ask a deeper question:

What influences the choices we make and the actions we take?

It became a question that shaped much of my professional and personal life.

Over the years it led me on a journey of observation, reflection and study, exploring the relationship between understanding, responsibility, choice and behaviour.

Gradually those ideas came together to form Arbitrium—a framework designed to make Human Agency more visible, more understandable and, ultimately, more effective.

Alongside my professional career, I continued to study human behaviour, responsibility and choice.

That journey led to the publication of How to Break Free from Fear – The Power of Choice and, ultimately, to the development of the Arbitrium discipline.

My purpose today remains the same as it was when that first question first captured my attention:

To help people better understand themselves, recognise the choices available to them and contribute more effectively to the organisations and communities of which they are a part.

I hope the ideas shared throughout this website encourage you to see Human Agency a little more clearly—and to recognise the opportunities it creates for individuals, organisations and society alike.
